Resumen:
Arid and semi-arid ecosystems in South America are best illustrated by two desert regions, the Peruvian and Atacama Deserts of the Pacific Coast and the Monte Desert of central Argentina.  These areas are the focus of this chapter.  The caatinga of northeastern Brazil is often described as semi-arid, but this most of this region generally receives 500-750 mm of annual rainfall and is treated in this volume as a dry savanna in Chapter X.  Small areas of Venezuela and Colombia near the Caribbean coast or in sheltered valleys support desert-like vegetation with arborescent cacti, Prosopis, Capparis and other arid elements, but these generally have more than 250 mm annual rainfall and are not further discussed here.  Finally, extensive areas of Patagonian steppe with semi-arid conditions are treated in Chapter Y.
