Resumen:
The paper will discuss the various levels of possession and awareness distinguished by practitioners of Afro-Brazilian religions in Argentina, and the different settings in which they may occur. For them, the existence of these different levels and the widespread occurrence of conscious possession make the evaluation of the possession experience difficult. It is argued that anthropologists, in order to gain a better understanding of the possession experience must consider the finer shades of the phenomenon that are distinguished emically.
