Resumen:
Anorexia nervosa (AN) affects mineral metabolism and the skeleton. Patients withAN and amenorrhea experience progressively decreased bone mass. Presently, thereis controversy as to the degree of bone recovery with hormone replacement therapy(HRT).Eight patients, aged 18.4 6 1.9 years (mean 6 SD), with AN and amenorrhea, who were started on HRT, were studied. Two patients had primary amenorrhea andsix had secondary amenorrhea of 2.2 6 1.4 year duration. Lumbar spine (LS) andtotal body bone mineral density (BMD) were evaluated by DXA and compared withcontrols. The following measurements, at baseline and at 6 and 18 monthspost-HRT, were performed: serum calcium levels (mg/dL); serum bone alkalinephosphatase (bAP; IU/L); and 24 h urinary CrossLaps (uCTx; &mu/mmol creatinine)were analyzed.
