Resumen:
Bovine materials are biocompatible and osteoconductive, allowing both, newly formed bone apposition and partial remodeling process. Synergy Bone Matrix (SBM) (Odontit Implant System) and Bio-Oss (BO) (Geistlich) effects were compared on bone healing process. A critical sized bone defect (CZD) was created at rabbit mandible both sides, and filled with each biomaterial or remained unfilled (control). Animals were sacrificed at 4, 8 and 12 weeks. We assessed clinical and biochemical systemic toxicity; lungs, kidney and liver anatomo-pathology; bone formation and device resorption histologically; X-rays and compression and flexural tests biomechanical test. None of the rabbits presented signs of systemic toxicity. Control developed either fibrosis or adipose tissue while, independently of the time-period, new bone formation or remaining bone substitute amount did not show significant differences between SBM and BO (p:ns). Radiopaque tissue showing proper healing with gradual replacement of bone grafts was observed in mandible CZD; no significant differences between SBM and BO were observed in elastic modulus, shear modulus and compressive strength while control group showed significantly lower values (p
