Resumen:
As a consequence of increasing prevalence of pediatric obesity, accurate methods to determine body fat have been demanded. Central obesity is related to cardiovascular risk factors. For this reason, current determinations should distinguish body fat distribution, and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) provides helpful information. However, a lack of reference values avoids its use in children. Objective: To obtain reference values of % body fat (FM%) and fat-free (FFM%) mass of entire body (total) and of different areas (trunk tr, arms ar and legs le) in clinically healthy children aged 2 to 6 years. Children (n=102; 48 boys (B) and 54 girls (G)) attending a day care center at La Matanza, Argentina, were evaluated. Body composition (total body and trunk tr, arms ar, legs lg) as FM% and FFM% by DXA (DPX-L Densitometer, Pediatric Software) were determined. Results (mean ±SD): (a) FM% total B=20.16 ± 5.49, G=26.01±6.04, tr B=14.88±4.76, tr G=20.24±5.58, ar B= 21.96±6.96, ar G=28.41±7.75, lg B=25.51±6.02, lg G= 31.88±6.50. (b) FFM % total B=76.07±6.06, G=70.50±6.56, tr B=34.88±3.02, tr G=32.20±4.26, ar B=7.34±0.90, ar G= 6.90±0.96, lg B=21.44±2.42, lg G=20.29±2.49. In boys, total FM%, as well as the different areas were lower (Pb G=26.01±6.04, tr B=14.88±4.76, tr G=20.24±5.58, ar B= 21.96±6.96, ar G=28.41±7.75, lg B=25.51±6.02, lg G= 31.88±6.50. In boys, total FM%, as well as the different areas were lower (PbPb 0.0001), but total and tr FFM% (Pb0.0001) including ar and le (Pb0.05) resulted greater than girls, consistent with studies outside of Argentina. In boys, total FM%, as well as the different areas were lower (PbPb 0.0001), but total and tr FFM% (Pb0.0001) including ar and le (Pb0.05) resulted greater than girls, consistent with studies outside of Argentina. Given the availability of DXA to evaluate body composition, it is of clinical significance to obtain local reference values by gender that will be helpful in clinical of Argentina.
