Resumen:
The Bahía Blanca estuary is the northern portion of the large Colorado River delta which is presently restricted to a coastal stretch of only 60 km to the south of the estuary. At that point, the estuary consists of a series of major channels with a NW-SE trend that separates wide tidal flats, low salt marshes and islands. These major channels are, from north to south, the Canal Principal, Canal Bermejo, Bahía Falsa, Bahía Verde and Caleta Brightman. The channels to the south of the Principal were most probably formed by the migration of a large branch of the Colorado River that migrated successively to the south. However, the Canal Principal was developed by a local river that no longer flows into the system. Inland of the estuary there are a series of depressions, some of them reaching -40 m, that must have been flooded during periods of higher sea level stand (about 4000-6000 yr BP). We present the possible distribution of the estuarine environment during the Flandrian transgression.
