Resumen:
The study area is located in the inner part of Bahía Blanca estuary. Samples were collected in two fixed stations: one in the urban waste waters discharge zone and the other - for reference - in the main channel of the estuary. The aim of this work is to study the species composition and temporal distribution of the ciliate community taking into account physical, chemical and biochemical parameters. Inferences on their presence are also done.Sampling was carried out from 6/16/95 to 6/4/96 with a frequency of 15 days approximately, using a plankton net of 30 µm mesh and a Van Dorn bottle. Samples were fixed with 4 % formaldehyde and Lugol solution, respectively. Observations and enumeration of ciliates were carried out with an inverted microscope. Temperature, salinity, pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, particulate organic matter, chlorophyll a, phaeopigments and inorganic micronutrients were measured. Twenty species of ciliates belonging to Choreotrichida, Oligotrichida and Tintinnida were present. Strombidium sulcatum, Strombidium dalum, Strombidium sp., Tintinnidium balechi and Tintinnidium sp. aff. semiciliatum were the most numerous in the waste water discharge station. A saprobic index according to Sladècek (1973) and Foissner (1988) is indicated for each species.
