This chapter analyzes the relationship between trade and the environment in developing countries, stressing the contradictory effects related to economic growth associated with trade expansion and changes in the composition of agriculture production, production techniques and patterns of international specialization. The orthodox thesis the critical approach and other more pragmatic approaches are discussed. Some recent experiences in the agriculture production in Thailand, Indonesia, Argentine and Honduras are analyzed in relation to policy instruments and multilateral trade rules. Some preliminary conclusions are presented considering the scale effects, the composition effects and the technical effects on agriculture of trade liberalization
