Since the area is extremely dry, this lake was a magnet for human populations. Two field seasons concentrated in the archaeological study of the lake and its immediate catchment were conducted. This research was part of the “Proyecto Interdisciplinario Potrok Aike” (PIPA). Previous information was limited to that provided by the excavation of the Potrok Aike rockshelter, with a date of 740 + 180 14C years BP (Gómez Otero 1993).
