Resumen:
During the 19th century, the Western world incorporated new territories into our systems of knowledge and exploitation. In contrast to other contexts, Antarctica represented an inhospitable and uninhabited place. In general, the history of the occupation of the continent was told from a cartographic point of view. In this work we attempt to discuss the diversity of experiences lived by people in their first encounter with the landscape. We particularly focus our attention on the first sealer camps established on South Shetland Islands. Our analysis takes into account the material aspects of sealers´ daily life in different scales and contexts.
