Resumen:
The use of high-quality rocks andheat-treatment by hunter-gatherersduring the initial exploration andcolonization of America has beenemphasized by different authors. Here we present the case of theSouthern End of the Deseado Massif, where human occupations havebeen dated from the PleistoceneHolocenetransition until historicaltimes. Results of an intense surveyof lithic resources show the presenceof primary and secondary sourcesof middle and high quality siliceousrocks, most of them of hydrothermalorigin. These siliceous rocks havea highly localized occurrence and,in most cases, their quality doesnot match the one found at thearchaeological record ?whichencompasses logistic sites, multipleactivity sites and caches of artifacts?.Here we present the results of heattreatment experiments on localavailable rocks, focusing in samplesmainly from primary sources. Resultsobtained are compared with theartifacts found, in order to evaluate thepotential utilization of the differentsources and the presence of heattreatment in the local archaeologicalrecord.
