The Tractatus dephilosophica interpretatione sacrae Scripturae by Heymericus de Campo has come down to us completely and inanonymous form only in the Cod. Cus. 24. This is an inaugural lecturetaught at the University of Cologne in 1435 according to the Statute of theFaculty of Theology. In the first lesson he develops a threefold classificationof mystical, symbolic and philosophical theology. He refers to Pseudo-Dionysiusand Albertus Magnus. However, this scheme was modified in lesson 9, wheresymbolical theology haesn?t an intermediary place but the lowest level of allthree categories. The goal of my paper is (1) to provide a description of thedoctrinal structure of the treatise in order (2) to establish a gnoseologicalconcept that makes it possible to explain the epistemological inconsistencybetween the two passages.
