In this paper we propose some considerations for the analysis of social and political relationships in the northern Levant during the Middle Bronze II (mainly during late IIA and IIB phases, ca. 1850-1650 BC). We state that the adoption of Egyptian practices held by the Byblian chiefs should be understood as elite emulation, proposing that the subjacent reasons for the acquisition of such practices might be related to the potential existence of a conception of inter-elite bonds as patronage in the northern Levant during that period.
