Resumen:
In this article we discuss the place that official history has often assigned to nineteenth-century sealing and sealers in two different, but historically related, contexts: the Antarctic and the New England port towns. Considering this, we present ways in which both traditional historiography and cultural heritage management have approached sealing and sealers in both locations. Finally we also describe the efforts that the research project "Landscapes in White" has made, and continues to produce, an alternative approach to the early Antarctic history.
