The extinction in the Southern Galactic disk as seen from the VVV Survey A Rayleigh-Jeans extinction map

We report on the development of an extinction map for the Galactic disk basedon a combination Near Infrared observations of the ESO public survey VVV, complementedwith GLIMPSE and 2MASS data. Our results, using the Rayleigh-Jeans Color Excessmethod, have allowed us to obtain a map with a maximum pixel size of 1?×1?, which isconsistent with other extinction maps developed recently. Furthermore, our results show asystematic underestimation of extinction by previous work based on 2MASS NIR data alone.
