Resumen:
The tight-binding model for graphene is briefly reviewed and its symmetries and dispersion relation are discussed. A continuous nonrelativistic model for graphene, based on a noncommutative deformation of the Heisenberg algebra, is presented which incorporates some elements of the tight-binding model, as the second neighbor interactions and the symmetry relating the Dirac points. Different from the pseudo-relativistic model commonly accepted, the present one shows a nondegenerate spectrum. In particular, a splitting in the otherwise degenerate zero modes explains the anomalous integer quantum Hall effect characteristic of monolayer graphene.
