Resumen:
The main objective of this paper is to explore, from a comprehensive approach, differentaspects (economic, symbolic, among others) of the relationships between animals and pre-Hispaniccommunities in the southern foothills of the Tucumán province, taking as a case study the Yánimas 1 site (ca. 1100-800 AP). Hence, a zooarchaeological analysis of a sample from an anthropogenic mound of this site was performed, using taxonomic, anatomical, taphonomic and contextual parameters, in addition to consultation of ethnographic sources. The obtained results allowed us to recognize a wide range of exploited taxa (including wild and domestic), showing a wide biogeographical distribution pattern. Also, the integrated data evaluation suggests that some of this wildlife had an active role in the practice of rituals and ceremonials, either as part of gifts, meals or as objects with special powers.
