Resumen:
Phytomonas are protozoan parasites from the Trypanosomatidae family whichinfect a wide variety of plants. Herein, Phytomonas Jma was tested as a modelfor functional expression of heterologous proteins. Green fluorescent proteinexpression was evaluated in Phytomonas and compared with Trypanosomacruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas? disease. Phytomonas was able toexpress GFP at levels similar to Trypanosoma cruzi although the transgenicselection time was higher. It was possible to establish an efficient transfectionand selection protocol for protein expression. These results demonstrate thatPhytomonas can be a good model for functional expression of proteins fromother trypanosomatids, presenting the advantage of being completely safe forhumans.
