Resumen:
Ruthenium polypyridine complexes have found broad applications in physiologicalresearch. Their rich chemistry and photochemistry makes them very well suited for awide range of techniques, both as probes and as light-controlled tools and moleculardevices. Described applications range from passive staining of particular cellularstructures and specific, high affinity Ca2+ channel blockers, long-lifetime fluorescentprobes for various environmental variables like pH or water accessibility or nucleic acidintercalators, to active photoinduced generators of reactive oxygen species andphotoreleasers of biomolecules like nitric oxide, aminoacids, neurotransmitters, ionchannel and metabotropic receptor agonists and antagonists, and so on. In this chapter wewill focus on several research lines and examples which, in our opinion, are importantrepresentatives of the many promising possibilities that Ruthenium complexes makeavailable for physiological research.
