In a phylogenetic study based on mtSSU rDNA and EF-1α sequences obtained from 48 Argentinean and 50 European strains, we found that 9 Argentinean F. poae strains from Argentina present an insert of ±1600 bp in their mtSSU sequences. A BLASTx search using public databases and the insert sequence as query showed an E value=2 e-74 and 6 e-72 with LAGLIDAG endonuclease from Podospora anserine and Gibberella zeae, respectively. Further bioinformatic analyses using the Rfam and RNAweasel programs revealed that the insert sequence arranged with the group I catalytic intron IC2. The presence of this intron in the mtSSU sequence may lead to interesting evolutionary conclusions within Argentinean F. poae strains. This is the first report on the existence of introns in the mtSSU sequence of F. poae.
