Resumen:
Abstract: CARACTERIZATION OF THE PARANA RIVER UPPER LITORAL COMPLEX: ENVIRONMENTAL UNITS.- Different author studied the Paraná River Upper Littoral Complex from different approach covering physical-geographical and biological features. It's environmental heterogeneity and complexity has been widely recognized due to the different processes (geomorphological, hydrological, fluvial, marine and biological) that come out in the area, including spatial and temporal variability. The objective of this paper is to characterize the upper portion or the Littoral Complex from its regional, geomorphological and landscape characteristics providing management tools for a correct environmental management. Base thematic cartography is generated by type of deposit (main channel, old, and over-flooding), category of systems (main stream adjacent islands, main stream islands, Coronda System, Parana System, Upper Littoral Complex portion) and hydrology (with and without suepended sediments). This last one shows higher water/land ratio in the occidental portion of the area. Four types of dominant vegetation category are found, they distribute following defined patterns linked to topographic gradient, consequently hydrological gradient. Forest physiognomies are the richer ones, and are placed on higher parts, lower and intermediate areas are usually occupied by grassland communities.
