Resumen:
Biogeochemical cycles in Paraná River floodplain forests (Argentina): Litter production. Litter fall was studied in four representative forests of Paraná River floodplain in the Pre-Delta area (Argentina) during 1998-2002 period. The objectives of this study were to describe and compare litter fall values and analyze the relationship between litter fall and flooding pulse. Forest dominated by S. humboldtiana and T. integrifolia present similar productivity values (5.32-8.19 t ha-1 a-1 y 4.55-7.85 t ha-1 a-1) but different from the other two studied forests; in addition, timbó blanco (A. inundata) and laurel del río (N. angustifolia) forests have different contribution rates (2.62-3.69 t ha-1 a-1 y 8.8-10.34 t ha-1 a-1, respectively, p<0.0001). These values are close to other estimations for subtropical forest in flooded areas. Leaves are the dominant fraction in litter. Litter distribution pattern is characteristic of each forest. The litter-fall has a seasonal pattern associable to the hydrological pulse. Key words: Litter fall, litter, floodplain, Paraná River, flooding pulse
