ABSTRACT The different phytolith analysis methodologies, used in South America since the beginning of its scientific application to the present, are presented. The taxonomic and parataxonomic classification systems are analyzed, considering the ICPN 1.0 proposal as a point that allow the creation of a classification system that not only describes phytolith morphotypes but also achieves a common and open nomenclature system to facilitate the identification of diagnostic morphotypes and avoids a multiplicity of names. An added qualifier nomenclature code will facilitate the interdisciplinary task and will allow more precise definitions of diagnostic phytolith characters.
