Resumen:
Anhinga fraileyi integrated an important diversity of snakebirds during Neogene from South America. This species was described using an almost complete tarsometatarsus. A detailed reexamination of the holotype of Anhinga fraileyi allowed proposing a new systematic status for the species. Purported diagnostic characters of An. fraileyi were also found in Macranhinga paranensis (holotype or paratypes) or rejected due to their states of preservations. In addition, this species of Anhinga shares numerous characters with Ma. paranensis and Meganhinga chilensis, being more similar to the first species. In conclusion, all evidences indicate that Anhinga fraileyi is a synonym junior of Macranhinga paranensis.
