Resumen:
The fossil record of birds coming from the “Mesopotamian” levels (Upper Miocene) of the Ituzaingó Formation (Upper Miocene-Pliocene) at the Entre Ríos Province in Argentina consists in 16 taxa grouped in 8 families (Rheidae, Anatidae, Anhingidae, Palaelodidae, Phoenicopteridae, Ciconiidae, Gruidae, and Phorusrhacidae) and 6 orders. The assemblage is dominated by waterbirds (darters, ducks, flamingos, storks, and cranes) adapted to wetlands, marshes, and forested areas along the margins of the incipient Paraná river. The presence of open savanna areas developed farther from the river margins are inferred by the records of some terrestrial birds such as rheas and phororhacids.
