Resumen:
Electrochemotherapy(ECT) in veterinary medicine is a well established treatment modality for tumors of any histology, particularly for melanoma. However oral malignant melanoma has its own characteristics that have to be addressed in order to obtain a good response. For his work 67 patients weretreated following the updated standard operating procedures for ECT. Our experience is as follows. The overall objective response rate was 70%. Bestresponses were obtained in stages I and II, as tumors were smaller. Tumor size is one of the most important prognostic factors of response in ECT, regardlessof lymph node invasion. However, tumors at a caudal location proved to be difficult to treat and thus rendered poorer results. Treatment of bone tissue isparticularly challenging, and thus patients with bone invasion obtained poorer response rates and survival times. Sixty-three percent of the patients requiredonly one treatment session to achieve final response. The development of metastases was less frequent when compared with other treatment modalities. Moreover, patients treated at stage I, obtained 100% objetive responses and developed no metastases. Survival times per stage were similar to surgicalresection or radiotherapy, but with fewer side effects, lower recovery times, and lower incidence of metastases. We consider ECT to be a excellent treatmentoption, especially at earlier stages of disease for oral malignant melanoma.
