Emotional Intelligence Self Report Tests. A preliminary study
of convergent and discriminated validity
Abstract
The objective of this investigation was to study the convergent and discriminated validity of two emotional intelligence self-report tests, the Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i) of Reuven Bar-On (1997a, 1997b) and the Trait Meta Mood Scale developed by Salovey, Mayer, Goldman, Turvey & Palfai (1995).
The sample was composed by a total of 72 adult people of both sexes (n = 42 males and n = 30 females) between 18 to 37 years old from security forces of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina.
The Bar-On Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i), the Trait Meta Mood Scale (TMMS-24) and Revised Inventory of Personality NEO (NEO PI-R) (Costa & McCrae, 1995) were administered.
Some correlations were made between the emotional intelligence (EQ-i) and the TMMS-24 in order to study the convergent validity; and correlations between the two tests of emotional intelligence with the (NEO PI-R) respectively in order to study the discriminated validity.
According to the studied sample, we can conclude that there is a low relationship between the EQ-i and the TMMS-24. Related to the discriminated validity it was observed high correlations between the EQ-i and the NEO PI-R, especially between the neuroticism factor and the EQ-i. However, the TMMS-24 showed a low relationship with the personality factors.
