Resumen:
For the ancient inhabitants of the Andean highlands, cochineal represented the material that dyed and incarnated the warp and weftof sacred and noble textiles. These cultural practices would not stop; instead, they would be resignified in the elaboration of Spanish colonial Peruviantapestries and textiles. For the painters of the viceroyalty of Peru, cochineal would play an importantrole in achieving technical solutions to aesthetic and creative problems, aswell as in their representation of a whole new iconography in the SouthAmerican Spanish territories.
