Resumen:
A scalable procedure was developed for the extractionand purification of pachydictyol A, the main diterpenoidisolated from the brown alga Dictyota dichotoma. The organicextract of this species is a complex mixture of a large variety ofditerpenes, and in this work, the protocol was employed successfullyfor the purification of gram quantities of this compoundfrom Patagonian D. dichotoma collected from algalwash. Pachydictyol A, together with other minor diterpenoids, was tested for antifouling activity against the invading freshwatermussel Limnoperna fortunei, using a byssal thread formationassay. The results obtained in the study showed a potent antifoulingactivity for pachydictyol A at 4.7 ¨¬g cm−2 disk load. Asfor the other diterpenoids, dictyoxide was also considerably active, while dictyol C and dictyotadiol had a considerably loweractivity. Taking into account the large biomass of algal wash andthe abundance of D. dichotoma, together with the effectivenessof the purification protocol, these results show that pachydictyolA and dictyoxide have a good chance to become natural, nontoxic, and ecologically friendly additives in antifouling paintsfor the protection of submersed structures against L. fortunei.
