Resumen:
A substantial body of research has been devoted toward studying the role of the GABAergic system in the processes involved in memory formation. In those studies, It has been repetitively found that GABA is involve in the consolidation and reconsolidation of memory [1], they report deleterious effects when GABAergic inhibition is augmented and facilitating effects when the inhibition is reduced. Memory extinction is the process in which a conditioned response gradually diminishes over time as an animal learns to uncouple a conditioned response (CR) from a conditioned stimulus (CS) [2]. To date, there is a considerable amount of research that interprets extinction as a new memory that inhibits and competes with the original trace. However, there are those who argue for the extinction as the forgetting of the original memory. The role of the GABAergic system in extinction is controversial. While some authors had found facilitation of extinction when administrating GABA agonists [3 , #], most of them had found amnesic effects [1]. Concisely, the dominant model of fear learning and extinction states that a reduce GABAergic neurotransmission is necessary for memory formation. Here, using an invertebrate model, we investigate the functional role of the GABAergic system in the different memory processes. Our primary objective is to study the role of GABA in the various phases of memory, namely, consolidation, reconsolidation and extinction. The salient goal will be focused on dissecting the acquisition, consolidation and expression of extinction memory in order to determine how the GABAergic system is involve in memory processing.
