Resumen:
NF-kappa B activation has recently been shown to be necessary for long-term memory consolidation and reconsolidation in the inhibitory avoidance learning in mouse. NF-kappa B is activated in the nucleus of hippocampal cells in a specific temporal window both in consolidation and reconsolidation. Previous results showed that the transcription factor is also present in synaptic terminals. More importantly we found NF-kappa B strongly bound to membranes of these terminals. Some evidence has been found that, at this site, the transcription factor interacts with mRNA. Whether this affects the RNA¥s capability of being translated and if so, in what way, is yet to be discovered. This work focuses in the dynamics of its synaptic activation during consolidation and reconsolidation; discussing the novel localization of NF-kappa B in membranes of synaptic terminals and the possible role in local protein synthesis.
