Resumen:
Monitoringwater quality parameters and their ecological effects is usually achievedthrough field sampling programs. However, this can be labour intensive andexpensive and it is often necessary to assume that in-situ samples, which arelimited spatially and temporally, are representative of the total area ofinterest. In this preliminary study, we consider the potential application ofSentinel-2 and Sentinel-3 satellites data for monitoring Suspended ParticularMatter (SPM) and turbidity by combining different algorithms and atmosphericcorrection schemes. For this purpose, in-situ data have been collected in theSado estuary (Portugal),within the framework of the AQUA-Sado project, between March 2018 and June2019, to evaluate the agreement between in-situ measurements and satellite-derivedestimates. Results suggest that turbidity is retrieved with smaller uncertaintieswhen compared to SPM which might need a local calibration. Nevertheless, preliminaryresults demonstrate that remote sensing could be a good cost-effective option formonitoring these water-quality parameters with high spatial/temporal resolution.
