Resumen:
We study the energy loss of protons scattered from a Cu(111) surface. We evaluate separately the different energy loss channels. The contribution of valence electrons is obtained using dielectric theory evaluating the surface response function within the random phase approximation. In order to characterize the surface band structure, the electronic single-particle wave functions and energies are obtained by solving the Schrödinger equation with a realistic one-dimensional model potential. The contribution of the 3d shell electrons to the energy loss is described with a multiple collision formalism, where the interaction of the projectile with 3d electrons is described by means of a sequence of single encounters with atoms belonging to the first atomic layer. For completeness, the energy lost by protons is also calculated within a jellium model that includes 3d and valence electrons at equal footing. The comparison with experimental results shows that our model captures adequately the main features of the energy loss process.3d shell electrons to the energy loss is described with a multiple collision formalism, where the interaction of the projectile with 3d electrons is described by means of a sequence of single encounters with atoms belonging to the first atomic layer.
