Resumen:
In a recent publication, Moro et al [1] reported stopping powers of 0.9-3.6 MeV protons in Al and Mo. These accurate measurements are associated with a rigorous uncertainty budget, thus constituting valuable benchmark data for the theorists. The experimental stopping powers of [1] were compared to the predictions of the unitary convolution approximation (UCA), semi-empirical parameterizations (SRIM, PSTAR, ICRU 49) and Monte Carlo codes (Geant3, Geant4). In the present work we extend the comparisons including a non-linear model. Specifically, the contribution of the weakly-bound electrons is computed from ?effective? transport cross sections [2] pertaining to the Thomas-Fermi-Weizsäcker potential [3], taking into account the non-homogeneous spatial distribution of the valence electrons of Al and Mo in the respective unit cells. In turn, the contributions of inner shells to the stopping power are evaluated by means of the shellwise local-plasma approximation [4]. The ensuing theoretical stopping powers are in good agreement with the existing experimental information [1,5].References[1] M.V. Moro, T.F. Silva, A. Mangiarotti, Z.O.
