ROLE OF GLUTATHIONE S-TRANSFERASE GENETIC VARIANTS IN THE ONSET OF PORPHYRIA CUTANEA TARDA IN HIV INFECTED INDIVIDUALS

A high association between Porphyria Cutanea Tarda (PCT) and HIV infection (15%) is found in Argentina. Slight evidence exists about if PCT triggering in HIV patients is related to the infection and/or the therapy. Glutathione S-transferase (GST) is a member of Phase II drug metabolizing system. Some genetic variants that alter GST activity affecting xenobiotics levels are of clinical importance: GSTT1 null, GSTM1 null and GSTP1 (rs1695, c.313A>G). The aim was to analyze the possible role of these polymorphisms in PCT/ HIV association. A population of Control (no PCT, no HIV), HIV (no PCT), PCT and PCT-HIV were studied. Analysis of GSTT1 null and GSTM1 null variants was performed by multiplex PCR and the genotyping of GSTP1 (rs1695, c.313A> G) variant was done by PCR-RFLP. The homozygote deletion frequencies for GSTT1 were: 8.3% (Control), 6.7% (HIV), 10.5% (PCT) and 14.3% (PCT-HIV). The null genotype frequencies for GSTM1 were: 41.7% (Control), 53.3% (HIV), 36.8% (PCT) and 32.1% (PCT-HIV). No significant differences were detected in the allelic/genotypic frequencies for GSTP1 among the groups. Regarding GSTM1, the frequency of the null genotype was significantly lower (p
