Resumen:
Parenting Styles and Coping Strategies inCongenital Hypothyroid ChildrenPardo Campos, M.L.1, 2; Musso, M.3; Keselman, A.2, 4; Bergadá, I.2, 4;Introduction: Congenital hypothyroidism detected early andtreated properly does not lead to mental impairment, but requiresprolonged treatment, care, and control. As a chronic disease it requireslong life treatment and this may influence the bonding betweenparents and child. This link also influences on the resourcesof the child to deal with conflictive situations. Objectives: To describe predominant perceived parentingstyles in congenital hypothyroid children from the perception ofthe child (son) and to identify their coping strategies.Patients and Methods: An intentional sample of 60 congenitalhypothyroid children, detected through neonatal screening andadequately treated since the first month of life, aged 9 to 10 years, was selected and compared with 60 healthy children of the sameage that were recruited as a control group. Inclusion criteria were:absence of other concurrent diseases, half day school, parents witha complete high school educational level. The evaluation was performed with the Argentine coping questionnairefor children aged 9?12 years, Argentina Scale perceptionof the relationship with Parents and Test Wisc III: comprehensionsubtest.MANOVAs were carried out as statistical analysis, with a significancelevel of p < 0.002.Results: Congenital hypothyroid children perceived the relationshipwith their mother as democratic based on tight controlwhile the perception of the relationship with their father was basedon acceptation.Regarding to coping strategies the CH children showed a tendencyto seek greater support and a tendency to paralyze facingproblems. Conclusion: The tendency to seek greater support and to paralyzewhile facing conflictive situations could be linked to the greatermaternal control. This could be expressed as a psychological andbehavioral trait of greater dependence and paralysis that must betaken into account in the monitoring of the CH children?s development.
