Resumen:
The aim of this study was to analyze the protein expression of the chemokine receptor CCR2 and its ligands (MCP-1 and MCP-2) in the ovary during the natural estrous cycle of the domestic cat (Felis catus). Thus, ovaries from adult cats (n=32) at estrus (E), diestrus (D) and anestrus (A) stages were fixed in 10% neutral-buffered formalin and embedded in paraffin for general histology and immunohistochemistry. Histologic appearance was that described for E, D and A in other species. Theca and luteal cells showed more intense expression for CCR2 in comparison to granulosa cells. Also, CCR2 positive staining was found scattered in the stroma in all stages. MCP-1 and MCP-2 showed high expression in a widely distributed fashion, comprising stroma, theca, granulosa and luteal cells at E, D and A. In accordance to their receptor expression, levels of these chemokines were differentially expressed in the follicles depending on their developmental stage. In conclusion, the receptor CCR2 and its ligands are highly expressed in several cell types in the feline ovaries during the natural estrous cycle, suggesting a possible role of these chemokines in the ovary that may extend beyond their role as a chemoattractant, warranting further analysis.
