Dr Juan Jorge Heinrich passed away in Buenos Aires August 26th2016 at the age of 78. He was born in Breslau (then Germany,today Wrocław, Poland), but his family moved to Argentinawhen he was a very young child. He obtained his M.D. degreeat the University of Buenos Aires, and soon afterwards heshowed his interest for medical research becoming aresearch fellow of the National Research Council of Argentina(CONICET). Eager of his Teutonic origin, he then moved toZurich as a scholar researcher of the Swiss government, wherehe trained with Prof. Andrea Prader, and subsequently toHamburg, with Prof. Jürgen Bierich. In1964, he obtained a position at the Divisionof Endocrinology, Buenos Aires Children?sHospital (Hospital de Niños RicardoGutiérrez), then chaired by Dr. MartínCullen. Dr. Heinrich joined an emerginggroup, enthusiastic and engaged inexperimental and clinical research, whichincluded colleagues like Drs. César Bergadáand Marco Rivarola. In 1970, Dr. Heinrichobtained his PhD degree at the Universityof Buenos Aires with his work on ?Steroidinduced sterility: the action of sex steroidson the maturation of the genital tract inthe rat?. He then became interested ingrowth, and pioneered the treatment ofchildren with short stature due to hypopituitarism in Argentinaand Latin America. The ?Growth and Development? workinggroup that he led for many years at the Buenos Aires Children?sHospital reached highest research quality standards, withaccomplishments that deserved publication in the New EnglandJournal of Medicine.
