Phylogeography in the Payunia District: evolutionary history of two endemics Adesmia species with contrasting live forms

We investigated the phylogeography of two endemic plant species with contrasting life forms (herbaceous vs woody plants) of the Payunia District, Adesmia pinifolia Gillies ex Hook. &Arn. (Fabaceae, shrub) and Adesmia quadripinnata (Hicken) Burkart (Fabaceae, herb). This study is part of a wider research about the effect of past climatic changes on plant community of the Payunia District. The Payunia District corresponds to a transitional area between the northwestern Patagonia, the southeast Monte Desert, and the High Andean region at the west, encompassing all extra-Andean mountains between 34°-39°S in Mendoza, Neuquén and Río Negro Provinces in Argentina. We sampled the whole geographic range of each species and used two chloroplast markers to analyze spatial patterns of genetic diversity and population structure. We also inferred historical demography, dated the genealogy of haplotypes and reconstructed the spatio-temporal diffusion of lineages within species. As a complementary approach we modelled the historical distribution of each species during the Last Glacial Maximum.
