Resumen:
Hypogeous fungi comprise of phylogenetic related or unrelated species, all showing morphological features ofconvergent evolution resulting from an adaptation to the hypogeous habit. The distribution of hypogeous fungiis global, yet the knowledge on their diversity, distribution, and of their traditional or recent uses in gastronomyis only well studies for some areas. We aim to summarise the current data on the hypogeous fungi diversity asassessed in recent decades, focusing to Europe and with potential implications globally: In the next step thedistribution of hypogeous species with well know ecology will be reviewed in light of their ecosystem role, namely saprophytes or mycorrhizal species. For the latter the several examples exists that the host plant speciesand the general ecology guide the selection of specific genotypes. A further view on the multiple roles ofhypogeous fungi will be presented and discussed in scope of the potential studies and applications in Brazil.
