Resumen:
Ecosystem services have become a mainstream concept forthe expression of values assigned by people to variousfunctions of ecosystems. Even though the introduction of theconcept has initiated a vast amount of research, progress inusing this knowledge for sustainable resource use remainsinsufficient. We see a need to broaden the scope of research toanswer three key questions that we believe will improveincorporation of ecosystem service research into decisionmakingfor the sustainable use of natural resources to improvehuman well-being: (i) how are ecosystem services co-producedby social?ecological systems, (ii) who benefits from theprovision of ecosystem services, and (iii) what are the bestpractices for the governance of ecosystem services? Here, wepresent these key questions, the rationale behind them, andtheir related scientific challenges in a globally coordinatedresearch programme aimed towards improving sustainableecosystem management. These questions will frame theactivities of ecoSERVICES, formerly a DIVERSITAS project andnow a project of Future Earth, in its role as a platform to fosterglobal coordination of multidisciplinary sustainability sciencethrough the lens of ecosystem services.
