Resumen:
Phylogeographic inferences, applied in a comparative framework across multiple species at a regional scale, provide the means of detecting regional and landscape-level patterns of biodiversity important for understanding macro-ecology and evolution in a geographical mosaic against a backdrop broadly impacted by geologic events, as well as for identifying areas of high conservation priority. In just the past few years Patagonian phylogeographic knowledge has been accumulating for both aquatic and terrestrial organisms, and though a few qualitatively concordant demographic or spatial patterns have already emerged, no attempt has been made to review salient patterns comparatively across major organismal groups. In this review we compiled the current published knowledge about the phylogeography of co-distributed plants and terrestrial vertebrates from Patagonia in order to compare levels of genetic diversity, demographic processes, phylogeographic breaks, and putative refugia to produce the first summary of emerging phylogeographic patterns for this region. This review reveals some congruent phylogeographic patterns within and among plants and terrestrial vertebrates, and suggests that Pre-Quaternary as well as Quaternay geological events would have been important driving forces in the evolutionary history of Patagonian lineages. Different processes and directional range shifts suggest a mosaic of phylogeographic patterns, far more complex than the several north-south common patterns traditionally proposed.
