Resumen:
In this work, a sodium montmorillonite (MMT) clay was simultaneous modified with two different molecules:an organic surfactant hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium (HDTA) and a silane, dimethyldichlorosilane (DMS).The modified clay was mixed with polycarbonate (PC) in order to check the ability of this clay as reinforcingadditives, but principally to know the influence of the loading on the thermal, transport and superficialproperties of the polymeric matrix. The modified clay were incorporated to polymer via solvent castingmethod and three different loading of silanized clay was used to modify PC: 1, 3 and 5 wt %.Characterization of silanized clay by X-ray diffraction shows that the modified species (HDTA and DMS)were intercalated, so the basal spacing of the clay increased. In addition, this clay presents good thermalstability and this provide a best thermal resistance in polymer matrix. In effect, thermogravimetry analysis ofPC/modified clay nanocomposites showed higher thermal stability when the content of clay was 3 wt %, due to the best dispersion of filler. On the other hand, the result of DSC shows that the presence of the filler doesnot produce significant changes in the value of Tg. The presence of the silanized clay into polymer matrixalso modifies the polarity on polymer surface. This was analyzed by contact angle measurements incomposite materials using solvents with different polarities: Diiodomethane, Waters, 1-naphthyl bromideand Ethane-1,2-diol. The results show that the polymer composites has more affinity towards those speciesless polar, which is in accord with results of pervaporation experiments. In effect, the permeation of watersolvent through the membranes was higher than the alcohol. Then, an interesting application of this newsmaterials would be in the separation processes of ethanol ? water mixtures, as systems from the biomassfermentation which generates mixtures with 3-8 wt % of ethanol.
