Resumen:
ABSTRACT: Dense membranes were prepared using a hydrophilic polymeric mixture of poly(vinyl alcohol) and poly(acrylic acid). The poly(vinyl alcohol) was chosen due to its hydrophilic character, good chemical stability, high temperature resistance and easy processability, while the poly(acrylic acid) is greatly hydrophilic. Then, thermal treatment of the membranes to promote crosslinking of the blend polymer was undertaken. From infrared spectra with horizontal attenuated total reflectance (FTIR/ HATR), surface chemical composition of dense membranes and incorporated hydrophilic groups, were analyzed. Crosslinked dense membranes were investigated with water- ethanol mixtures performing sorption experiments at several temperatures (30, 40, 50 and 60°C). A sorption-diffusion mechanism governs mass transfer through polymeric membrana, therefore thermodynamic aspects were analyzed, the solubility parameters (Hildebrand) and solvent interaction parameters (Flory-Huggins) in the polymeric mixture were estimated to evaluate the effect of water and ethanol in the polymeric matrix.
