Re-examining the hydrolytic activity determination of lipases using p-nitrophenyl esters

Many of the investigations that employ lipases need to quantify as accurately as possible its hydrolytic activities. Most common methodologies use either natural substrates (vegetable oils) or synthetic substrates. Among synthetic substrates, the p-nitrophenol alkyl esters with different chain lengths are the most used. However, methodologies differ substantially from each other, making unreliable the extrapolation of different reports. This work makes focus on the study of two parameters which are usually not studied: solvent´s substrate and use or not surfactant.
