Resumen:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the ultrafiltration as an alternative for the recovery of tannins in the leather industry. An ultrafiltration (UF) membrane was tested in this work, this membrane was the GR60PP. A sample of exhausted liquor from sole tanning from an industry of vegetable tanning of cowhide located in the Province of Salta - Argentina was used for this work. Experiments were carried out in a lab-scale filtration apparatus with tangential flow and recirculation. Chemical analyses were carried out in our laboratory and in the laboratory of SA Arlei Tannery Salta - Argentina, according to the procedures of the standard methods. The determination of tannins and non-tannins was carried out by the Filter Method. The UF membrane GR60PP was efficient in the rejection of tannin keeping constant the permeate flow (8.79 L/m2 h) after four hours of operation. The total permeate obtained has a very low concentration of tannin and total solids, therefore is possible to reuse it in the same tannery.
