Resumen:
Improving the performance and efficiency of medicines is one of the most promising contributions that nanotechnology is able to make, enabling the development of novel therapeutic and diagnostic strategies. Among the huge number of possibilities in the field of nanomedicines, the maintenance and improvement of antibacterial therapeutics are really challenging, due mainly to the prompt appearance of antibiotic resistance derived from the misuse of this kind of medicine. In this context, this chapter is focused on the description of different therapeutic alternatives based on metallic nanoparticles, including general properties, advantages and disadvantages, and potential applications. Some remarks regarding future challenges are also discussed.
