AbstractThe production of Li2CO3 from natural salt brines consists of a series of evaporation and precipitation stages in atmospheric ponds to geta concentrated lithium solution containing approximately 6 % Li+, which is adequate for precipitation with CO2 or Na2CO3. The processalso yields some byproducts like NaCl, Mg(OH)2, gypsum (CaSO4.2H2O), borates, sylvinite and an impure saturated NaCl solutioncontaining mainly Mg2+ and Ca2+. The possibilities of employing the bybproducts from the lithium industry as alternative raw materialsto get better added value products are analyzed in this paper.Keywords: salt brines; SudAmerican Puna; lithium industry; byproducts
