Resumen:
After more than eighty years dengue reemerged in Argentina in 1997. Since then the four serotypes have been circulated and produced from small outbreaks to large epidemics. Actual conditions preclude dengue for being endemic in this region and epidemics are triggered by introduction of cases from the neighboring countries of Bolivia, Paraguay and Brazil where dengue is endemic. In this talk I will present a brief resume of the dengue situation in Argentina. Then I will focus in the analysis of the larger epidemic recorded. Space-time dynamics show that Dengue infection spread from local foci, likely by mosquito dispersal, while human mobility disseminates infection through the urban landscape. Association with socioeconomic variables and dengue incidence seem to depend of the level of population aggregation. Current efforts and challenges, as well as some results from mathematical modeling also will be discussed.
