Resumen:
Bisphosphonates integrate a wide family of drugs that behave as specific inhibitors of osteoclastic activity. They have also got a potent anti-angiogenic and antitumoral effect, with a long life term in bone for years. Since the first reports about their clinical efficacy in the treatment of Paget`s disease in 1971, bisphosphonates have become one of the main keys in the treatment of osteoporosis. Bisphosphonates are also used in the treatment of multiple mieloma and bone metasthasis of solid tumors as breast, lung and prostate cancer. They constitute the main treatment for patients with malignant hipercalcemia and are used in the management of multiple mieloma and bone metastasis of breast, lung and prostate cancer. However, at the end of 2003 and beginning of 2004 the first reports about the association of the use of bisphosphonates and osteonecrosis of the jaws were published. An update of this topic for dentists knowledge is presented.
